Virechana / Vamana

Home » Virechana / Vamana

Virechana (therapeutic purgation) and Vamana (therapeutic emesis) are two key Panchakarma procedures used to remove deeply accumulated doshas from the body—under strict professional supervision. At Saankhya Ayurvedam, these therapies are planned only after detailed consultation, preparation procedures, and careful assessment of strength, digestion, and suitability.

Vamana is primarily aimed at balancing Kapha dosha and is traditionally recommended for chronic congestion, heaviness, excess mucus, certain skin conditions, and Kapha-dominant imbalance patterns.
Virechana focuses on balancing Pitta dosha and is commonly considered for acidity, inflammatory skin tendencies, heat-related discomfort, and digestive irritation patterns.

Preparation matters:
Both therapies require Purva Karma, which may include internal oleation (snehapana), Abhyanga, Swedana, and a controlled diet plan to bring toxins and doshas into a removable state. This preparation stage is what makes the main therapy safer and more effective.

What happens during therapy:
On the therapy day, the practitioner follows a classical protocol using specific herbal preparations. Vital signs, hydration, and response are monitored. After the main procedure, a structured recovery diet (samsarjana krama) is followed to rebuild digestion gradually and restore strength.

Why people opt for these therapies:

  • Targeted dosha cleansing for chronic imbalance patterns
  • Potential improvement in digestion and appetite regulation
  • Support for recurring skin, respiratory, or inflammatory tendencies
  • Enhanced lightness, clarity, and routine reset
  • Foundation for deeper rejuvenation therapies

Important note: These are intensive procedures and should not be attempted without qualified supervision.
